American student and military veteran Jaboris T. Brown graduated in May from Webster Vienna Private University (WVPU) and is currently pursuing hobbies and a possible career pivot toward acting. WVPU interviewed Brown via email just before the new academic year began.

WVPU: Tell us briefly about yourself.

JB: I’m American and studied Media Communications at Webster. Before I started my studies, I was a United States Marine serving in the American military for five years, which brings me to my current status of taking a nice long break while pursuing my hobbies and dreams of acting.

WVPU: What brought you from the United States to Austria?

JB: I had prior experience living in Austria from my time working for the U.S. Embassy, and I knew I wanted to study here, as well.

WVPU: Can you share a memorable experience about your time at Webster Vienna?

JB: Webster was such a welcoming place, from its day-to-day staff who work at the front desk to the professors. Each person has had a significant influence on me, and I am grateful to have met them. I can honestly say that it was a much easier transition than I thought it would be as one of the older students.

WVPU: Can you share with us a little bit about your experience using your Mass Communications skills in the military workforce environment?

JB: The U.S. military generally operates on a top-down structure. Information is passed from the top of the organization all the way down to the lowest rank and of course, some information stops at those who need to know.

As a sergeant and a leader within the organization, being able to relay information that specifically fits to the people to whom I am relaying orders is of utmost importance. They need to understand the orders, but also be given a chance to give feedback as this helps with cohesion within a small team — known as a fireteam in the Marines — to get the best results.

WVPU: Anything else you’d like to share about what you learned from studying communications at Webster Vienna?

JB: I can say that I have learned the significance of understanding your organization to be sure you’re using the right kind of communication. Each type of communication has its pros and cons, and it’s important to choose the right one.
