Background and Facts

Melanie Sindelar is a social and cultural anthropologist with research interests in nationalism, contemporary art, global art markets, the Gulf and Indian Ocean countries.
She has recently received her Ph.D. in socio-cultural anthropology from the University of Vienna with distinction. Her doctoral research project 'Their past in a painting: contemporary art and local heritage in the UAE' examined the relationship between contemporary art production and nation-building. 

Melanie Sindelar holds an MSc in Social Anthropology with a focus on the Middle East from the University of Oxford and a BA in Prehistoric Archaeology from the University of Vienna. During her Ph.D. research, she was a guest researcher at the Max Planck Fellow Group 'Connectivity in Motion' at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle/Saale, Germany, and IFK Junior Fellow Abroad, IFK International Research Centre for Cultural Studies of the University of Art and Design Linz. She was furthermore a uni:docs fellow of the University of Vienna and is currently the coordinator of the Center for Doctoral Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
