Art History: Art Appreciation

 

 

 

Marlene Rutzendorfer is a curator and architect based in Vienna. She studied Architecture at Vienna University of Technology and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure  d´Architecture Paris La Villette. Her PhD focuses on the architecture of Francis Kéré, as well as the historical and contemporary cultural context of the so-called „Opera Village Africa“ in Burkina Faso, initiated by German artist Christoph Schlingensief. In 2014 she participated in a workshop led by Francis Kéré for USI Mendrisio in Gando / Burkina Faso and held a creative atelier with the students of the Opera Village primary school. She has presented her research in the course of Urbo Kune at WU Wien, at Semper Depot / Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, and at IFK - International Research Center for Cultural Studies, and has been invited to speak at this year´s ACASA Triennial in Accra, Ghana.

In 2011 she worked at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York and from 2012 to 2013 as an assistant stage designer at Burgtheater Wien and Salzburger Festspiele.

Marlene Rutzendorfer is a board member of wonderland - platform for european architecture, as well as a founder and co-curator of Architektur.Film.Sommer at Az W, Architecture Center Vienna. As the curator of Architectuul - Week of Austrian Architecture, she participated in the discussion „Unfinished - the future of regional architecture“ held at the Serbian Pavilion of the XIVth Architecture Biennial Venice. In the course of the Vienna Biennale: Ideas for Change at MAK - Museum of Applied Arts Vienna, she taught at Vienna University of Technology's future.lab. Marlene has curated shows and film programs for various institutions, including Az W, DAZ Berlin, Harvard Graduate School of Design and the Austrian Cultural Forum Berlin. In addition to her curating and academic work, she has also written for the Austrian arts magazine Parnass.

She has recently been awarded a Junior_Fellowship at IFK - International Research Center for Cultural Studies /University of Art and Design Linz in Vienna and a Visiting Scholarship at Harvard University, Department of History of Art and Architecture, as well as a Fohn Scholarship.
