Webster Model UN 2015 Kicked Off on Saturday

Webster Model United Nations 2015 officially kicked off on October 17! This year’s topic Geopolitics of Resource Scarcity brought over 100 delegates to Palais Wenkheim in Vienna. Designed as simulation in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations and international organizations, the conference gives delegates a first-hand opportunity to experience how it would be to work in international affairs.

After an introduction by Webster’s provost Julian Schuster, the opening’s ceremony keynote speech was given by H.E. Ambassador Hubert Heiss, Austrian Ministry for European and Foreign Affairs. He discussed the evolution of Austria’s energy policies in an international context. Prof. Dr. Franco Algieri, Webster Vienna’s International Relations Department Head, highlighted the fact that WebMUN is able to integrate the expertise of three of Webster’s academic departments (International Relations, Media and Business) in exemplary manner. WebMUN’s Secretary General Dennis Heumann swung the gavel, symbolically opening the conference.

One of WebMUN’s distinctive features, last year’s invention of interconnectivity sessions, was a huge success and continue to be popular this year. Delegates representing their countries meet during break-time between sessions to discuss and co-ordinate their efforts and policies.

This year, the addition of the diplomatic corps as independent body further enhances interconnectivity enabling the coordination of one country’s representatives throughout all committees.

WebMUN 2015 will close on Monday, October 19, with a ceremony honoring the contribution of extraordinary delegates. For more information and the schedule, check webmun.org.
